Jay Z, Beyonce Joined Trayvon Martin Rally

The Rev. Al Sharpton brought some star power to his 100-city protest for fallen Florida teen Trayvon Martin Saturday. The civil rights leader appeared in a New York City rally with rapper Jay Z and his songtress wife Beyonce, tweeting a selfie with star-studded pair and Trayvon’s mother Sybrina Fulton to prove it. Beyonce, who wore a fitted dress and high heels to rally, also shared a picture of her wrist band on Instagram.

Sharpton called for protest rallies in 100 U.S. cities last weekend after a jury of six women acquitted neighborhood watch Hispanic volunteer George Zimmerman of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges related to the late night slaying of African-American teenager Trayvon Martin. Civil rights advocates say Martin, who was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and carried a ice tea and skittles when Zimmerman spotted him, was the victim of racial profiling. Zimmerman argues that he defended himself after he and Martin got into a physical fight.

At the NYC rally Jay Z and Beyonce opted to keep a low-profile. However Sharpton spoke on behalf of the couple saying, “Jay Z told me, ‘I’m a father. Beyonce is a mother.’ We all feel the pain and apprehension — the laws must protect everybody, or it doesn’t protect anybody.”Jay Z and Beyonce are parents to baby girl Blu Ivy. Together they have dabbled in politics, throwing exclusive fundraisers for Barack Obama. Beyonce also wrote an open letter to First Lady Michelle Obama praising her as a mother, wife and black woman. However they have also been caught up in political controversies such as an ill-advised trip to Cuba and criticism from Singer Harry Belafonte for turning “their back on social responsibility.”
