Nigerian Minister of Youth and Sports development: National Sports Festival Not Postponed Indefinitely

December 8, 2020 |

Nigerian Minister of Youth and Sports development, Sunday Dare, has confirmed that there is no indefinite postponement of the 2020 National Sports Festival (NSF), which was scheduled for Benin, Edo State.

Dare said a new date for the Festival would be agreed on by the Ministry and the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is the second time the Games has been suspended by the federal government after the outbreak of the global health crisis.

The minister attributed the latest suspension of the NSF to recent #EndsSAR protest as well as security challenge in Edo State with the coronavirus protocols.

He said that to host the Festival, they had to prepare the COVID-19 infrastructure, since they would have to test everyone coming for the event, also look at the fallout of the #EndSAR protests, with the experience in Benin and Lagos on what it has created to ensure security.

In addition, they’re going to deal with up to more than 8000 to 10,000 participants. That number shows that the PTF came with a letter showing that less than 10 days would not be sufficient to get full COVID-19 compliance for the event.

President of Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), Engr Musa Nimrod, also stressed at the seminar about the need for the Nigeria’s government to build community sports centers throughout the country towards making of future champions. He emphasized that it’s necessary to build community sports centers in all the states in order to discover and make future champions in the whole country.

FCT Football Association chairman, Alhaji Adam Mohammed Mouktar, also noted that traditional sports have to move with current trends of using technology to improve maximum productivity. According to him, the use of technology has been proved to help in enhancing the performance of athletes who is capable of attracting sponsorship and they have set up a group who will concentrate on protecting sports facilities across the country.
