Nigerian Sports Ministry Lists Strict Conditions to Meet Before NPFL Comes Back

September 10, 2020 |

Although the ban on sports activities due to the Covid-19 pandemic has been lifted by the Presidential Task Force (PTF), the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports Development (FMYSD) has required both the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and the club owners to meet strict conditions before the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) can resume.

The National Coordinator of the Taskforce, Dr. Sani Aliyu, disclosed in Abuja last Thursday that football activities and other outdoor events are allowed to return without spectators inside the stadium but under the strict supervision of the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the FMYSD.

But according to a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Sports Ministry, Mr. Gabriel Aduda, on Tuesday, the NFF as well as the club owners are not allowed to open any stadium for games without totally implementing the club licensing control before the new football season can replay.

The Permanent Secretary said that they are happy that the ban on sports has been lifted after months of inactivity due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The Ministry would make sure that all protocols and guidelines are obeyed as directed by the PTF and the NCDC to safeguard the lives of players, coaches, officials and fans. A Covid-19 Monitoring and Approval team has also been set up by the Ministry with the aim of ensuring compliance before any game is held.

Gabriel Aduda warned that the national domestic league would not be able to restart until basic conditions are fulfilled and the Ministry is responsible for enforcing the total implementation of the Club Licensing Control (CLC) as stipulated in the statues that set up the NPFL.

The NPFL won’t commence until the regulations and controls that bother on licensing and financial control are enforced. The NFF must enforce these controls and regulations as stipulated. If not, both the nation’s professional and amateur leagues would not be approved to restart.
