Sports Ministry Demands N10 Billion to Renovate and Upgrade Facilities

For the umpteenth time, the Ministry of Youths and Sports Development has said it would require between N5billion to N10 billion to renovate and upgrade sporting facilities located across the country.

The Minister of Sports Sunday Dare in a statement on yesterday by his Senior Special Media Adviser Joshua Akaniji said that his ministry is looking for particular intervention funds from the government to carry out the renovations.

The Minister also revealed that approval has been given for the concession of the National stadium Surulere in Lagos State.

He said that they had concessions approval to concession the national stadium, Surulere and the process had been ongoing but it was delayed because of the lack of concession advisers and they had been able to overcome that.

In a related development, the Minister said the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja will soon get a facelift as he stated that the final stage of the agreement with Dangote Group is almost concluded.

Dare also explained why the much talked about renovation of the sporting edifice by business mogul didn’t commence immediately.

He added that work would soon commence at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja and they were on the verge of completing the documentation process, as well as review contracting process for the rehabilitation of the Moshood Abiola Stadium before the Covid-19 pandemic struck.

He emphasized that it was a private company and they had to go through a lot of processes. They had to invite more than eight different contractors, visit the stadium, turn in their bill of quantity, and also sit on a review board.

“We have to remember that we can’t force or accelerate the process since we are dealing with a well respected Nigerian bringing in his money without any plans to maintain the National Stadium,” he added.
